Hypnotism is true or false?

I was on a cruise a couple of weeks ago and this guy performed his hypnotism act and just tell anyone to go on stage and fill the seats. Then he just started to say as 1 2 3 4 5 ... you fall asleep and stuff then they did and also made everyone do what he asked them to do and also a lady crying on stage because he had fear that "lost" her navel and a boy, a teenager, he also spoke about China because the Hypnotist tells him it is only in China and understand Chinese or something I really like so curious to know if everybody was just playing so long the hypnotist does not make fun of himself or it was indeed real, because if it were I truly believe that would use it more than just a performance.
